Tiffany & Co. is an American jewelry and silverware company founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and Teddy Young in New York City in 1837 as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium." The store initially sold a wide variety of stationery items, and operated as Tiffany, Young and Ellis in lower Manhattan. The name was shortened to Tiffany & Co in 1853 when Charles Tiffany took control, and the firm's emphasis on jewelry was established. Tiffany & Co. has since opened stores in major cities all over the world. At some point, it was acquired by Philadelphia-based investment company Bankers Securities Corporation.

As part of its branding, the company is strongly associated with its Tiffany Blue box, which is to become one of their symbols to their product elegance and superiority. Tiffany's flagship store, since 1940, is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in Manhattan, New York City. The polished granite exterior is well known for its tiny window displays. The store has been the location for a number of films including Breakfast at Tiffany's, starring Audrey Hepburn, and Sweet Home Alabama, starring Reese Witherspoon. The former Tiffany and Company Building on 38th Street is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Tiffany & Co. uses the standard of 925 silver in their products in the year 1851. By adding copper, zinc, or nickel to pure silver, they were able to strengthen the silver without taking away from its distinct silver luster. This allowed Tiffany to produce silver rings, silver pendants, silver necklaces and other Tiffany silver jewelry to be able to continue to last through the years. Tiffany & Co. began to gain its popularity with its role in the affairs of the country. The United States adopted the standard of sterling silver as 925. They helped supply the civil war in the Union army by manufacturing swords and other weapons for the soldiers as well as surgical implements.

After the war was over, they created fine gemstone ceremonial swords for the generals Grant and Sherman. It was honered when they received the award for excellence in 1867. This award was special because Tiffany & Co. became the first American firm to win it for fine silver work.
